SonicWall Firmware Update
This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to back up your configuration and update the firmware on your SonicWall firewall device safely. Performing a backup before upgrading is essential to prevent configuration loss.
Prerequisites
- Administrative access to the SonicWall management interface.
- The latest firmware file downloaded from the official MySonicWall portal.
- local computer with network access to the SonicWall Firewall device.
BackUp Firewall Configuration
- Log in to the SonicWall management interface.
- Go to Device in the top menu.
- Navigate to Settings → Firmware and Settings.
- Create a Local Backup:
- Click Create Backup → Local Backup.
- This action saves your current configuration in the SonicWall’s memory.
- Export Configuration:
- Click Export Configuration.
- Save the exported .EXP file to a safe location on your PC.
Note: Keeping a local and external backup ensures configuration safety in case of upgrade issues.
Uploading the Firmware
- Go to Device Settings Firmware and Settings.
- Click Upload Firmware.
- Browse and select the downloaded firmware file from your computer.
- Click Upload.
- A warning message will appear asking for backup confirmation.
- Click OK if you have already completed the backup.
- Wait for the firmware to upload this process may take several minutes.
- Do not leave the page or power off the device during upload.
- Booting to the New Firmware
- Once the upload is complete, click the "Boot" icon on the far-right.
- Choose one of the following boot options:
- Uploaded Firmware with Current Configuration (Recommended)
- Uploaded Firmware with Factory Default Configuration
Note: Select the first option to retain your existing settings.
- A warning message will appear prompting for reboot confirmation.
- Click OK to proceed.
- The firewall will reboot automatically, applying the new firmware.
After reboot, log in to confirm that the device is running the updated firmware version.
Post-Upgrade Verification
- Verify firmware version under Device Settings Firmware and Settings.
- Check network connectivity and service functionality.
- Ensure all security and VPN configurations are intact.
