Setting up a new Veritas DLO server
A new basic veritas (or symantec) DLO server can be setup using:
- Download appropriate version (Latest is 9.x at time of writing). Older versions such as 8.x are compatible with older server OS (2008 R2).
- Download appropriate Symantec DLO administrator guide
- Install DLO server as explained in administrative guide. If there is already an existing SQL server instance on the server, which also accepts AD administrative credentials, then use the same instance instead of setting up a new DB.
- During installation when prompted for key use my.veritas.com login and get keys.
- On the Desktop install the agent using graphical mode without using any silent option.
- Database and DLO management can be done using AD administrator account so there is no need to create any separate DLO administrators for basic setup.
- We can avoid creating a de-dupe server for initial basic setup. We can create one later.
- Create a test backup profile with following values:
- Profile name
- test profile
- Description
- Test profile
- Enable profile
- Yes
- Enable Dedupe
- No
- Enable BOI
- No
- VIP Profile
- No
- Limit for network user data folder
- Unlimited or no limit
- Enable Desktop user data folder
- Yes (This will help us in debugging in case we face difficulty in using DLO)
- Limit Desktop user data folder to
- Unlimited or no limit
- No backup throttling
- Backup selections
- Desktop, My documents, outlook, etc. based on options available.
- User settings
- Give most access to user. (This will help us in debugging in case we face difficulty in using DLO)
- Schedule
- According to a schedule
- Logout/Restart/Shutdown options
- Do nothing
- Choose appropriate backup schedule. Leave everything else default. We will any way run backup once using "Backup now" options of administrative console.
- Create a DLO storage location with Default values and automatic creation of storage location.
- We can avoid automated user assignment for basic setup. We can create one desktop and user pair for initial testing
- Manually create share for DLO. Only if automatic creation in above steps fails.
- Add a single user to DLO. Enable the user for giving access to DLO desktop agent.
- Select computer where agent is installed. Look at properties and default values.
- Run backup now for a desktop computer using DLO console
- Verify that backup has come to the shared folder and also to user data folder on the desktop machine.
- If required test restore.
