Windows Server 2016 Setup new Active Directory
To setup AD or deploy AD role / services on an Windows Server 2016 machine use following steps:
- Create a new Windows Server 2016 installation as per requirement
- Configure static IP on the server (eg 10.1.1.1/24).
- If there is no IPv6 connectivity, disable IPv6 on network interface.
- Change computer name appropriately (Eg DC) and reboot
- If required, enable remote desktop to the server
- Go to Server Manager -> Local Server -> Add Roles and Features and add roles for:
- Active Directory Domain Services
- DNS Server
- Choose to "Restart destination server automatically, if required"
- From Server Manager -> AD DS -> Promote this server to a domain controller
- Add a new forest - Enter desired domain name (Eg rndtest.com)
- Enter Directory Services Restore Mode password. This must be different than Windows Administrator password.
- Create DNS delegation with Administrator user
- Choose appropriate Netbios domain name (Eg RNDTEST)
- Click "Install"
- After installation validate that machine DNS is changed to 127.0.0.1
- If updates are required update the system and restart.
- In case of VM, shutdown and take snapshot for future purposes
