Rocky 9.x Thunderbird error logging

We can obtain logs from Thunderbird to help diagnose issues eg if there is some problem in moving emails between accounts. To enable and access logging in Thunderbird use:

Enabling Logging

  1. Open Thunderbird and go to the main menu.
  2. Navigate to Settings > General.
  3. In the "Find in Settings" search bar, type "config editor" and click on the "Config Editor" button in the search results.
  4. In the search field at the top of the Config Editor, enter one of the following preferences based on the protocol you're using:
    • For IMAP: mailnews.imap.loglevel
    • For POP3: mailnews.pop3.loglevel
    • For SMTP: mailnews.smtp.loglevel
    If the preference doesn't exist, create it by clicking the "+" (plus sign) button.
  5. Set the value to "All" (case-sensitive).


Accessing Logs

After enabling logging, you can view the log output by following these steps:

  1. Go to Tools > Developer Tools in the main menu.
  2. Click "OK" to allow the debug connection.
  3. In the new window that opens, click on the "Console" tab.
  4. To show timestamps for each entry, click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the Console and enable "Show Timestamps"


Saving logs

Now, attempt action that needs logs for deubbing. The logging information will appear in the console, providing details about the process and any errors that occur.

To save the log output for further analysis or to share with support:

  1. Right-click any of the console messages.
  2. Choose "Save all messages to file"
